BUCKSKIN

PERFORMANCE AND ADAPTABILITY

Buckskin is an early season variety with broad adaptability and particular success in the High Plains region. It has a strong early pod set and root rot tolerance, combined with early maturity and even dry down. In addition, Buckskin has an arched structure allowing most pods to stay off the ground, helping maintain good bean quality.

GROWTH HABIT AND MATURITY

Buckskin is an early season variety with a short upright arched vine. It matures in approximately 88 days, similar to Othello, approximately 5 to 7 days earlier than Bill Z.

QUALITY

Buckskin has a traditional pinto shape and size, with approximately 1,200 seeds per pound. Buckskin also has a distinctive bright background pinto color holding well in storage, lending itself to marketing.

DISEASE TOLERANCE

Buckskin is tolerant to the prevalent strains of Bean Common Mosaic virus. As compared to Othello, Buckskin has shown better tolerance to bacterial brown spot and halo blight. In addition, as compared to Othello, Buckskin has shown more tolerance to bean rust and white mold.

ROG179
PERFORMANCE AND ADAPTABILITY

ROG179 is a high yielding vine variety adapted to the High Plains and Northwest regions. ROG179 has a medium length vine with enough stem structure to keep many pods off the ground. ROG179 has the best performance on medium fertility or sloping soils where white mold can be managed.

GROWTH HABIT AND MATURITY

ROG179 is a mid-season vine variety with an approximate maturity of 95 days, or about the same as the Bill Z. variety.

QUALITY

ROG179 has the traditional pinto shape and size, with about 1,200 seeds per pound. It has bright attractive seed maintaining well in storage. Also, ROG179 seed has good cool soil germination.

DISEASE TOLERANCE

ROG179 is tolerant to the prevalent strains of Bean Common Mosaic virus. It has shown some tolerance to bacterial brown spot and halo blight bacterial bean diseases. ROG179 has some field tolerance to bean rust, and for best performance white mold should be managed.

REMINGTON

PERFORMANCE AND ADAPTABILITY

Remington is an new upright pinto variety adapted to most pinto growing regions. Remington is a mid-season type showing good yield potential and even dry-down. This allows Remington to be harvested in a timely manner. As with all varieties and particularly for upright varieties planting at recommended plant population is important. This is to avoid plant stem breakage associated with low plant population and occasionally seen in upright varieties. Remington is best used in regions were bean rust is a continuing production problem as it has demonstrated good tolerance to this disease.

GROWTH HABIT AND MATURITY

Remington is an mid-season variety, maturing in about 92 days or about 2 or 3 days earlier than Bill Z. It has a very upright growth habit and medium length runners that will close 30 inch rows. Pod set is high enough to allow seed quality to be maintained when harvest weather becomes a factor.

SEED QUALITY

Remington is a traditional pinto in color, shape, and size with approximately 1,300 seeds per lb. It has also shown good cool soil germination performance.

DISEASE RESISTANCE

Remington has a good combination of disease resistance. Remington is resistant to the prevalent strains of Bean Common Mosaic virus. It is also very tolerant to the current races of bean rust. Remington tends to escape most damage from white mold due to early maturity and upright architecture. It has also shown good tolerance to Fusarium root rot and has some field tolerance to bacterial diseases.

PINTO BEAN
Winchester

PERFORMANCE AND ADAPTABILITY

Winchester is a new pinto bean variety adapted to most dry bean production areas. Winchester has early maturity combined with multiple disease resistance, and begins to set pods early, giving it more yield stability. It also is an upright type with enough branching to fill 30 inch rows. The result is with the disease tolerance, architecture, and consistent pod setting, Winchester is a strong production variety.

GROWTH HABIT AND MATURITY

Winchester is an upright variety with a medium length runner and distinctly dark green foliage. It is a mid-season variety maturing in about 93 days or approximately 1 to 2 days earlier than Bill Z. Winchester has upright architecture, and it also has a high pod set keeping most pods off the ground. This is a benefit so reduced quality is not so likely by extended wet harvest conditions.

SEED QUALITY

Winchester has the traditional pinto size and color. It has about 1300 seeds per pound and are slightly more plump than some varieties. Cool soil germination performance has been good.

DISEASE RESISTANCE

Winchester has shown resistant to current races of rust. It is tolerant to white mold due to its very upright architecture and has shown some field tolerance to bacterial diseases. It also has shown Fusarium root rot tolerance and is resistant to the current strains of Bean Common Mosaic virus.

Brief Variety Description of Kodiak.

Kodiak was derived from the cross of two breeding line P90557/G91213. P90557 is an upright type II, rust- resistant pinto breeding line, and G91213 is a virus-resistant great northern breeding line from Michigan State University. Over 4 years of testing, Kodiak has out-yielded Aztec by 11% at 18 locations and Othello by 10% at 21 locations in Michigan. Kodiak exhibits an upright type-II, indeterminate growth habit averaging 48 cm in height combined with a tendency to lodge. It is a mid-season variety maturing 94 d after planting or from 90 to 98 d depending on season and location. Kodiak matures 2 d later than Aztec, and 7 d later than Othello. Kodiak is resistant to bean common mosaic virus, and rust, but is tolerant to root rot. It is susceptible to anthracnose, white mold, halo blight, and common blight. Kodiak has a large flat seed averaging 42 g/100 seeds and is similar to Aztec in size, shape and color. In canning trials, Kodiak has exhibited satisfactory canning quality equivalent to Aztec. Kodiak was released as a pure line variety and is within commercially acceptable limits of seed type and purity.
